  17. <p>    Since last June's crackdown on the student democracy
  18. movement, China has announced that it has put to death several
  19. dozen "counterrevolutionaries." The actual total may be much
  20. higher. In a telex to Chinese Premier Li Peng last week, Amnesty
  21. International called for an end to continuing secret executions
  22. that it termed "judicial killing." The human rights organization
  23. said it had evidence that the Chinese government had decided to
  24. shoot all prisoners charged with "most serious crimes" but to
  25. announce only enough deaths to intimidate would-be dissidents.

  27. <p>    In its new research report on the suppression of the
  28. protests by the People's Liberation Army, Amnesty labeled the
  29. official government toll of 200 deaths a "gross underestimate."
  30. Citing reports from witnesses, Amnesty claimed that soldiers
  31. firing indiscriminately into crowds killed at least 1,000
  32. civilians in Beijing and 300 in Chengdu. A government spokesman
  33. in Beijing said the charges were "entirely ungrounded" and that
  34. the demonstrators had used "terrorist means." Chinese embassies
  35. abroad released a grainy video presenting the official version
  36. with a narrator claiming that no one was killed in Tiananmen
  37. Square.
